چکیده

Survivability is an important network characteristic that provides a certain level of data delivery guarantees. The degree of survivability is usually governed by the data transfer mechanism or protocol that delivers data from source to destination. In this paper, we survey and discuss a variety of survivability issues, challenges and mechanisms in multihop wireless networks. Unlike some of the previous surveys, we do not focus only on multipath routing techniques. We try to cover a broader spectrum of survivability techniques in the literature. Moreover, we discuss new directions in survivability that uses the network coding technique in order to achieve a better degree of scalability, which is usually an issue in most survivability techniques, especially in wireless networks.

The Effects of Failures in PCS Networks

Research and development on the survivability of networks has largely focused on public switched telecommunications networks and high-speed data networks with little attention on the survivability of wireless access networks supporting cellular and PCS communications. This paper presents the effects of failures and survivability issues in PCS networks with emphasis on the unique difficulties pr...

Capacity regions for wireless ad hoc networks

We define and study capacity regions for wireless ad hoc networks with an arbitrary number of nodes and topology. These regions describe the set of achievable rate combinations between all source-destination pairs in the network under various transmission strategies, such as variable-rate transmission, single hop or multihop routing, power control and successive interference cancellation. Multi...

Does the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol Work Well in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks?

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the standard for wireless LANs; it is widely used in testbeds and simulations for wireless multihop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multihop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which multihop connectivity is one of the most prominent f...

SHORT: A Static-Hybrid Approach for Routing Real Time Applications over Multichannel, Multihop Wireless Networks

Many of the existing multichannel wireless network implementations rely on channel switching capability of the wireless radios to ensure network connectivity. However, due to both software and hardware restrictions switching channels incur a significant delay, which can be prohibitive for many delay sensitive, real time applications, such as VoIP and interactive gaming. The situation can be wor...
